ROMAN MARBLE HEAD OF THE GOD JANUS
Kende Galleries No. 359 #151, Collection of Henri Bendel, June 7, 1949
From the catalog:
THREE SMALL ROMAN AND ROMANESQUE MARBLE SCULPTURES
A Roman head of the god janus; pair of romanesque figures of seated lions, on square bases. 8-1/2" and 10"
More information:
Only Janus remains in the collection. An Italian marble, not granular in the creamy way of a Carrara marble, but fine enough grained to come from one of the Roman quarries. The features of both faces are deep-socketed with a flat geometrically edged nose-bridge. The Bendel collection was dispersed by Kende Galleries at the Bendel home.
The Janus is 19th C, not Roman.
